Archaelogic studies have unveiled the presence of humans in Cascais
since 5000 years ago in the paleolitic. Remains of ancient populations
have been found in Tires, Talaíde and in the natural caves of Poço
Velho.
A roman heritage in also found in some places in the region of
Cascais. After that, the arabs ocupied the area. The names Alcoitão and
Alcabideche are part of their mark.
In the XII century, it was finally conquered by the portuguese. It was then a small fishermen and land workers place. The name Cascais is the plural of cascal, mount of rinds - probably derived from the catch of great quantities of sea clams in the region.
